Local Meat Processing Plant to Open near Viroqua
Nordik Meats, Inc., a locally owned meat processing plant, will open and
start booking September appointments immediately.
Viroqua, WI — June 17, 2020 — Nordik Meats, Inc., a locally owned meat processing plant, is scheduled to open near Viroqua and begin taking September appointments online or by phone for cattle processing immediately. As a new solution for local producers and state inspected meat processors, Nordik Meats is boasting its prime location and federally inspected facility.
“The need for a local processing plant was very clear to many of us in the Vernon County community,” said Kevin Larson, Board member at Nordik Meats. He continues, “Many local producers travel 5-6 hours round trip in order to get animals processed, which is not good for the producer, the environment or the end product.” Nordik Meats is targeting to process up to 20-30 head of cattle per week with plans to add pork and other species at a later date.
Local Investors
Over the past few months, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many consumers have made a shift to buy local and the need for a meat processing plant in our area has been evident for some time. “Local food sovereignty and independence has a place in our community and the goal with our investors was to create a federally inspected facility that can support local farmers and our community,” said Larson. “Many of our investors are fourth or fifth generation Vernon County residents and they want to see our community thrive on our own food sources that we know and trust.” Together, a group of individuals charged forward to help fund a locally invested business forming Nordik Meats, Inc. From farm to table, the vision at Nordik Meats is to adhere to United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) guidelines and be a local solution for processing meat.
USDA Inspected Facility
“I’m very excited about the facility and its capabilities,” states Ross Williams, General Manager at Nordik Meats. He continues, “Our team is made up of people willing to go the extra mile to build upon a state-of-the-art facility and focus on the wholesale farm to finish program.” Nordik Meats will be federally inspected and can start taking appointments online or by phone, focusing on beef cattle at first with hopes to add pork and deer processing in the future.
Nordik Meats will strictly be a processing facility, not a retail outlet. Its purpose is to support local retail shops and producers that currently have long wait lines for meat processing. Managed by experienced staff stemming from a variety of agricultural backgrounds, an ambition of Nordik Meats is to offer processing solutions in a variety of cutting options and appointment booking that can be chosen online. Though direct retail purchases will not be an option, Nordik Meats will work hard to partner local consumers with local producers.
Online Booking
As a way to help generate efficiencies, Nordik Meats has built a website to book online meat-processing appointments and easily choose a variety of cutting solutions. “The idea is to give the customer the power to book their own appointments online,” states Williams. “With an easy website to navigate, anyone can instantly see our schedule and choose what time works best for them.” Williams also goes on to explain they offer a variety of cutting options for whole or half beef and/or dairy breeds. Customers who book online will receive a discount for their appointment commitment.
“It’s a great time to be part of a local meat business,” Williams concludes, “We want to help be a service to local producers who dedicate their livelihood to raising healthy, quality animals. From the time that animal arrives at our doorstep, we will make it our duty to ensure that animal is safe and handled appropriately.”
